  • Why Use FileFlex?
  • What makes Fileflex different?

    It is different from public clouds such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive through its proprietary decentralized or edge cloud architecture.

    All cloud storage providers, no matter who they are, use the same basic architecture. They all sync or copy to a centralized cloud server cluster. FileFlex, on the other hand, uses a decentralized or edge cloud architecture. No files are stored on our servers. Instead we use the storage and CPU power of existing client devices. Our server acts like a switchboard to connect users to their own storage.

    FileFlex abstracts files from their physical locations to enable remote access of files from their source locations. The location of the file can be on any storage device – a server, NAS, PC or cloud. This enables your server, NAS, PC and cloud storage to act an extension of your smart phone, tablet, or remote PC. You don’t need to build a private cloud or copy anything to a third party public cloud provider.

    Now you have a simple, user-friendly way to remotely access, share and stream 100% of your content, without having to move your content anywhere in order to do so.

  • Why Fileflex over traditional solutions?

    Traditional EFSS solutions involve either upload and sync to a third party or upload and sync to proprietary private cloud storage.  Traditional solutions have the following issues and limitations:

    • Data is still fragmented across disparate storage services and devices
      • Spread out over multiple cities and countries
      • Located over multiple servers and storage devices

    FileFlex addresses issues that cannot be solved by traditional solutions.

    • It addresses fragmentation and syncing issues because its virtualization technology makes all data accessible where it rests. It does not need to be duplicated, moved, and/or synced to a secondary location.
    • It addresses issues of privacy and security because all information can be contained on company owned infrastructure, on-premise, behind the firewall and with an activity log of in-app data flow. Sharing is restricted to permitted contacts only. There is no uploading to third parties and all in-app data-in-motion is encrypted.

  • What are some things I can do with Fileflex?

    Access and Stream Your Lifetime Collection of Music – Let’s say you have a massive lifetime collection of music. The collection is too big to put all of it on your phone, so you pick, choose, copy, and delete subsets.
    With FileFlex, you can keep your lifetime collection of music where you saved it. You can stream your music from where it was stored directly to your phone using FileFlex. The music is not downloaded to the phone, but remains where it was stored. By virtualizing your storage, that storage essentially becomes an extension of the phone’s local storage.

    Remotely Watch Any of Your Home Videos – Let’s say you have a huge collection of home videos that you recorded with your family camcorder and various family member’s phones. The problem is that this collection of high definition videos is HUGE. You can only put a few on your phone at a time, and you can’t possibly store them all on the cloud – just uploading them would take years.
    With FileFlex, you can keep all your videos where they are stored and simply stream them to your current device. No downloading, no uploading, and no need to carry around multiple devices.

You can share subsets of your collection, such as individual files or folders, but an entire media collection is simply too large to share through conventional means.   • Why would my business benefit from FileFlex?

    FileFlex is ideal for an organization that for cost, security, and privacy reasons cannot use business-grade public cloud solutions, and for cost and technical limitations cannot use FTP, private or virtual private clouds. It appeals to the segment of the market that one or more of the following needs: 1) to keep their data private and/or under corporate control on-premise, 2) has limited technical expertise and/or a limited IT resources such that they cannot technically execute a traditional solution, and/or 3) has a limited budget that cannot afford traditional solutions.  Organizations that are choosing the later are making security compromises on data that they make accessible by using a public cloud.

  • What is file access virtualization, and why would I want it?

    Traditionally, if you want files and folders to be available to on any device you are working on wherever you are, you are required to copy those files and folders to a secondary location such as a public or private cloud. It is the cloud storage that is virtualized. Files copied to the cloud are abstracted from their physical location, while the files on your devices are not. In other words, you have to copy your stuff from the storage on your device, to virtualized storage – to the cloud – to someone else’s computer.

    With FileFlex, you can virtualize your own storage. When you virtualize your own storage, all your files on all your storage devices are abstracted from their physical locations. All your files can be accessed from any computer, any laptop, any tablet or any smart phone, from anywhere. You don’t have to upload or sync them to a third party. Your data stays on your storage, on your premises, behind your firewall and under your control.

  • My NAS already has software - why do I need Fileflex?

    Some NAS manufacturers already have software that allows users to access, share and stream files stored on the NAS to remote devices. Unfortunately, however, that is where your device manufacturer’s software ends. It virtualizes access to the NAS, but nothing else. When you virtualize your NAS with FileFlex, you are also virtualizing access to all the devices and storage that are attached to the same network. You are virtualizing access to your server, any server attached storage such as a SAN, DAS, private cloud, or other NAS, and every PC and laptop on the same network. A NAS with FileFlex becomes a powerful gateway into all of it.   • I use the cloud - why do I need Fileflex?

    In order to share from the cloud, you have to copy your file to the cloud or you have to create a sync folder and sync to the cloud. You are creating duplicates of your files. Synced folders can be confusing. You cannot sync everything and can easily run out of sync space. It is easy to miss important files so that you do not have them when you need them. There are also inherent privacy and security risks. Even the most popular services such as iCloud and Dropbox have been breached, and Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have all had service outages.

    Cloud storage solutions virtualize their storage. Files stored in the cloud are abstracted from their physical devices so that they can be access and shared from your devices. Files stored on your storage devices are not virtualized, so you copy the files from your un-virtualized storage to their virtualized storage.

    Secure access and sharing using file access virtualization – The Better Way

  • I use a cloud-based music streaming service - why do I need Fileflex?

    Sure you can subscribe to a cloud music streaming service, however, cloud music can’t match listening to your own personal music collection on your smart phone.

  • Can Fileflex be used as a file manager?

    In short, yes –  FileFlex is arguably the world’s best file manager app for remote file management between multiple devices. Normally, if you want to create a folder, rename a file, or cut, copy, and paste for example, your file manager will only you perform file management functions to storage that is either on your device or networked to your device. It works for devices you are connected to, but not when you are remote. However, in today’s age, the traditional file manager app has simply not kept up with the demands of users that work remotely using multiple devices from anywhere in the world.   • Difference between FileFlex and FileFlex Enterprise?

    There are 2 versions of FileFlex.  FileFlex and FileFlex Enterprise.  FileFlex is designed for individuals and small business.  With FileFlex, the user is in control of their FileFlex account. For example, you may want to share your music collection, movies, videos, files and documents with your friends or co-workers and let them access these files remotely from their source locations.

     

    FileFlex Enterprise, on the other hand, is designed for organizations.  With FileFlex Enterprise IT is in control of its organization's and its users' accounts. Using FileFlex Enterprise, the administrator sets which user, within a company, is allotted to what department, which storage repositories a user can access and what permissions a user has. FileFlex Enterprise allows an administrator to audit the company's and its user's activities.

     

    Additionally, FileFlex Enterprise provides users with the ability to collaborate with each other using the collaboration tools. These tools lets users not only share a file, but also provides the option of letting the other user, with whom the file is being shared, download and edit their files.

     

    Further, one of the most important features of FileFlex Enterprise is that the FileFlex Enterprise server is hosted either by the organization or the organization's Managed Service Provider.  This allows the organization to keep governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) under their own GRC framework and under the control and policies of their IT department.  With FileFlex Enterprise an organization does not have to share GRC with third-parties, reducing compliance headaches and simplifying the storage infrastructure.  With FileFlex Enterprise, the organization itself manages a smaller environment, rather than a large and complex one shared with third parties.     The centralized cloud model is used by all cloud providers whether public, private, EFSS, CCP or hybrid clouds including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, Box and Dropbox.  In this model, hundreds, thousands or even millions of devices sync or duplicate a subset of their local storage to a central server cluster. Hundreds, thousands or even millions of users then connect to that server and access their files over the internet. Each user would have their own account on that server and files that they store or sync from their devices are then associated to their account.

  • What are the issues inherent to traditional cloud storage?

     

    Issues Inherent to the Centralized Cloud Architecture

     
    Since cloud storage services all use the centralized server architecture, they all have the following issues and compromises that are inherent to the architecture itself.
     
    Duplication, Increased Threat Surface, More Complicated Storage Structure
     
    With all cloud types – public, EFSS, private and virtual private clouds – users duplicate a subset of their files to the centralized server cluster so that those files can be accessed over the internet. This creates duplication and version control issues. Since each server will typically have both a near-line and off-line backup and may be replicated in other geographies to provide better global access there will be multiple copes of each file stored. Each copy made increases the threat surface of the organization and creates a more complex storage structure. This inherently increases the risk posture of the organization.
     
    Subsets
     
    Since many users and devices sync or store information on the centralized server cluster and because that server has limited storage, only a subset of an organizations overall data can be stored. That means that users will have to manage their allotment and often critical data will not be on that server and is unavailable. For example, an organization may have 1000 terabytes of overall data storage across all devices, users and locations. If they have 100 terabytes of cloud storage, then 900 terabytes of data are inaccessible at any given time due to the fact that not all storage has cloud functionality.
     
    Resource Intensive
     
    The constant syncing from all users and all their devices ties up multiple CPU cycles and bandwidth. It is very resource intensive requiring multiple servers, load balancers and facilities that all must be managed and secured.
     
    Expensive
     
    The centralized server model – depending on the scale – requires an expensive data center – multiple servers, storage arrays and supporting equipment such as UPS, backup generators, cooling, etc. The data center must be maintained by trained technical staff and it must be secured against malware, hackers, fire, theft, natural disaster, outages and human error. This is all to support the accessibility of data that is essentially a duplication making it expensive.
     

    Additional Issues Inherent to the Centralized Cloud Architecture Used by EFSS and Public Clouds

     

    Privacy
     
    Not all EFSS products are created the same when it comes to security and that is the real problem. Some public cloud vendors like Microsoft and Google adopt very strong security practices that are equivalent or better than those found in corporate IT departments; some do not. However, even though some may be very secure and some not, none of them can protect the privacy and confidentiality of the information stored on their servers. From a privacy perspective, it is never a good idea to give your confidential files to someone else. That information can legally be secretly accessed and exfiltrated by the cloud provider, by law enforcement and in some cases by foreign powers.
     

    Secret Exfiltration from Third Parties – The cloud provider is required by law to make sure that you are not using their platform for illegal activity. They must and do inspect your files for copyright infringement, child pornography, terrorism and money laundering for example. Even if you are not breaking any laws, increasingly some providers are even denying the use of their platform for moral activity or political positions they disagree with.[1] In any case, they have the right to secretly inspect your files at their discretion for any reason they determine.

     

    Secret Exfiltration from Law Enforcement – What about law enforcement trying to access your data? With EFSS and public cloud storage, you may not know that the provider was served a subpoena, warrant or security order. In fact, the provider may be prohibited by law from telling you. Although nearly every provider’s terms read differently, one thing remains the same. They all tell you explicitly they must and will comply with legal requirements from governments, security agencies and law enforcement (to secretly access your files) and are not responsible for any loss you experience.

     

    Secret Exfiltration from Foreign Powers – With the passing of the Cloud Act, U.S. law enforcement can serve an SCA “warrant” to cloud providers where recipients such as Google, Amazon or Microsoft are obligated to turn over evidence wherever located – even if it is stored on a server located in another country. Since SCA warrants are served in secret directly to the cloud provider and your cloud provider is prohibited from informing you that they have received a warrant to hand over your data, you are depending on them to defend your privacy. If for whatever reason they fail to do so, your data will be exfiltated without your knowledge. The sole remedy is for the cloud provider to ask a court to quash or modify the warrant. To quash or modify the warrant all 3 of the following conditions must be met. (a) the target is not a U.S. person; AND (b) compliance would conflict with the law of the country where the data is stored; AND (c) the court conducts a “comity” analysis and concludes that, on balance, disclosure isn’t warranted. If the data requested in your cloud storage is for a U.S. person or if the target of the request is a non-U.S. person but your own country does not have any specific privacy law to protect that data, then you have no protection. Finally, even if the request is for data on a non-U.S. person and it violates the privacy laws of your local government but the U.S. based court determines that U.S. law enforcement really needs it, then your data will be exfiltrated.

     

    Second the bill is reciprocal in nature as it would allow the Executive Branch to enter into “executive agreements” to allow qualified foreign governments with restrictions, to acquire data of their own citizens wherever located including if stored on servers located in the U.S., without regard to U.S. law or the U.S. constitution.

     

    In short, under certain circumstances, foreign governments can access data stored in public cloud services regardless of where the data is physically located around the globe, potentially circumventing local regulations. And the European Commission isn’t sitting idly by. It is readying its own legislation called the E-Evidence Directive to enable EU member countries the same jurisdictional reach as the U.S.

    With growing pressure to empower employees, associates, and customers with the latest mobile technologies and BYOD, governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) and who operates and controls the centralized server cluster is vital for an organization’s security strategy. The problem using the cloud and EFSS means your ‘latest technologies’ can quickly become a compliance headache because the actual compliance and management is outside of your control.

    FileFlex is a service from Qnext Corp that enables you to be easily connected with all of your files, pictures, videos, and movies no matter where you've stored them, where they are, or what device you're using.

    It does this by providing remote access, sharing, and streaming of files directly from their source locations – right from where they were saved.

  • How do I purchase Fileflex?

    FileFlex is purchased in-app. Simply open FileFlex, click the menu in the Global Application Bar, open Settings, and switch to the Profile tab. Then select the Access Billing link.

  • What does Fileflex do?

    Remote Access – It provides you remote access to your files and folders no matter where you stored them. Access can be from a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer; Android, iOS, BlackBerry, or Windows tablet or smart phone; or any internet connected kiosk. The access to all storage is from a simple dashboard.

    File Sharing – It allows you to remotely share files from their source locations without having to sync files to secondary locations. It does not use links that can be forwarded or copied to social media. Instead, it is permission-based to prevent unauthorized access. The files and folders you share act like an extension of your recipient’s local device. There are no storage limitations, no file size limits, no quality degradation (no compression), and no complicated IT type setup requirements for the sharing of files.

Upgrading is done inside the FileFlex app. To upgrade, open FileFlex, click the menu in the top right corner, then settings, then profile > billing status.

  • I have a FileFlex account created and an ASUSTOR NAS, but do not get the free one year FileFlex subscription. Why?
    There may be two reasons for why your FileFlex free trial may have ended
    after 30 days even though you have an ASUSTOR NAS.
    1) To get the 1 year free trial, users must connect FileFlex to their ASUSTOR
    NAS. If they create a FileFlex account, but do not connect it to their
    ASUSTOR NAS, they will only have a 30 day trial account, after which they'll
    need to make an annual subscription. To connect FileFlex to their
    ASUSTOR, follow the instructions outlined in this link.
    2) Only the first user of the NAS to connect FileFlex to their ASUSTOR NAS
    will receive 1 year free. Subsequent users of the same NAS will receive a 30
    day free trial and can purchase FileFlex at a promotional price. To receive
    the special price, they must have connected FileFlex to an ASUSTOR.
    To purchase, the user must open FileFlex and then select Settings from
    the main menu. In the Settings dialog box, they must open the Profile Tab
    and then follow the instructions to purchase. Look in the FAQs section for
    more support on how to purchase FileFlex.
    If users have not connected FileFlex to their ASUSTOR, they will be

    The annual subscription charges per user, and not per device. Once a user has subscribed to FileFlex, their FileFlex account allows the user unlimited devices (tablets, phones and computers) to connect to unlimited number of storage repositories.

    Users can just add their devices (be it laptops, PC, phones or NAS) using "Add Content Sources" option from the open menu on the Global Application Bar. You would also want to download the FileFlex app on your cell phones.

    In the example below we have set up virtual data room folders for 3 clients by simply creating folders that can be shared.

    We then click the down arrow for the folder/data room that we want to share and choose ‘Share’.

     

    In the sharing options, we allow for uploads by clicking the ‘Upload’ radio button.

    FileFlex includes the ability to automatically backup your photos and videos from your smart phones and tablets to your storage called Photo Sync. To use the Photo Sync feature, open FileFlex on the smart phone or tablet that you want to backup, then from the main menu in the top right corner (3 horizontal lines) select Photo Sync and then follow the wizard.

    You can back up as many smart phones and tablets as you want.

  • Where can I store my backed up photos and videos?

    You can store your backed up photos and videos to any storage repository you have added to FileFlex.

  • Can I restrict the backup of photos and videos to WiFi only and not use my cellular data?

    Yes - when you set up the Photo Sync feature, you can set up the option to only backup when the phone or tablet is connected to the Internet via WiFi so as to not consume your cellular data.

  • How does Photo Sync work if I am not connected to the Internet or my storage device is turned off?

    Photo Sync will only backup when you are connected to the Internet and your storage destination is turned on. If you are off-line when you take a photo or video, then FileFlex will wait until you are connected to the Internet and then backup your photos and videos. If you choose to backup by WiFi only, then it will wait until you are connected to the Internet via WiFi.

    If your storage destination is not turned on - for example if you are backing up to a PC - then
    FileFlex will wait until the destination is turned on and then backup your photos and videos.

    Otherwise FileFlex will immediately automatically backup your photos and videos as soon as you take them when you are connected to the Internet and your storage destination is ready to receive them.

  • Are there any storage restrictions for the backup of photos and videos?

    FileFlex will backup to the storage destination you have specified and is only restricted by the amount of space available. For example, if you are backing up to a 500 GB drive and it has 300 GB available, you can backup up to 300 GBs of photos and videos.
